Our private school in Beirut, Lebanon goes to great lengths to show our worth to prospective students. We believe that for quality assurance, our educational undertakings should be reviewed by unbiased, independent, third-party experts. This not only keeps us ‘on our toes,’ it also guarantees that Eastwood International School is meeting the world’s top educational standards. To put it plainly, it ensures we are not getting ‘old’ or ‘stale’ in our approach.
The discipline it takes to continually assess our own programming is extensive. However, we believe it’s worth it. It makes us a better school for our students. It gives us a spot on the international stage, among our peers in the education sphere. It allows us to become an influencer in education, since we are constantly learning, and have much to share with others through these improvement processes.
You can be sure that the leadership team at Eastwood International School is devoted to maintaining its standing as one of the best schools in Lebanon, and – we hope – in the world.
Below are some of the accreditations, awards and successes we have achieved to that end:
International Baccalaureate® Diploma Program (IBDP) authorization
Eastwood International School is proud to announce that we received our IBDP authorization at the start of February 2016. Only schools authorized by the IB Organization may execute any of its academic programmes.
This achievement took over a year to implement, and we were among the first to do so in Lebanon. It involved extensive changes to our programming, educational material, professional skill set and even the physical amenities at our school.
To cap off this process, and give us the final ‘seal of approval,’ IB Organization representatives flew in to our Beirut campuses for a two-day assessment. This was to verify that we could meet the exceptionally high standards of the IB Organization.
We are happy to say that we not only ‘passed,’ but received several accolades for our efforts; 13 commendations and zero matters to be addressed, to be more precise. We were also praised by the way Eastwood is operated. We have moved from a very hierarchical approach to a very flat and team-based administration and leadership.
For more information about our IB Programme offering, as well as the process Eastwood underwent to become IB accredited, please see this page of our website.
The IB Diploma Programme is only our first venture in becoming a true, international school in Beirut.
We are now also offering the IB Primary Years Programme (for ages 3-12) at our Mansourieh campus for the English and French Sections. Eastwood is one of the only schools offering a full IB-PYP French program in Beirut. Eastwood International School is a PYP Candidate school.
And yes, the IB Middle Years Programme is next on our list! Stay tuned!
AdvancEDTM qualification by the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI)
Eastwood International School in Mansourieh earned accreditation from the North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI), a division of AdvancEDTM in 2011, and again in 2016.
Our school scored in the top 1% out of 33,000 accredited institutions globally. This is a testament to our deep understanding of curricula, our commitment to professional development, and our relentless effort to always look ahead in the education world.
Being able to use this badge of honour involved an extensive assessment and overhaul of our school programming, based on key performance indicators relating to:
- Mission and vision
- Teaching and learning
- Support services
All our staff was involved in the required self-study to examine our current standards, and to provide input on raising them. This process took nearly a year and a half to implement. The best outcome that can be achieved is a 5-year accreditation, which our Mansourieh American school achieved twice. The cycle must be renewed every 5 years to ensure quality.
Click here to download the latest report we conducted of our school in January 2016. Producing this report was a required portion of the NCA CASI accreditation.
In summary, to acquire our NCA CASI accreditation, Eastwood Schools dedicated itself to:
- A revised mission and vision statement (to better reflect our practice and philosophies).
- Implementing standardization in our student assessment policies.
- Starting an improved induction program for new teachers.
- Upgrading our playgrounds.
- Adding resources to our library.
- Changing our elementary reading and writing program to follow the model of the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project.
- Creating clearer systems with regards to referring students to be in the Special Rights department.
- Revising our communication strategies with our parents and stakeholders.
After these school improvements, a team of education experts from the NCA CASI visited our school for a duration of a week to verify whether we had upheld the standards we committed to. They conducted interviews with all our stakeholder groups – parents, teachers, students and admin members. They visited our classes, and assessed our school’s self-study reports.
After this official review, we were honoured to receive extremely positive feedback for our efforts. Dr. Mark Elgart, President and CEO of AdvancEDTM, the parent organization of NCA CASI, stated,
“NCA CASI Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Eastwood International School is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”
We currently plan to maintain our AdvancEDTM accreditation with another review in 2021, and for ongoing cycles afterwards.
